what i mean to say: marisa coulter is a product of a society in which women have no room for academic or professional ambition and has therefore been alone for the majority of her life while also being the victim of abusive parents, which has certainly contributed to her inability to connect with lyra on any level and has even left her unable to say the word mother without being emotionally compromised by the implication, also her reputation and standing in the magesterium was damaged by an extramarital affair that left her widowed and a single mother while the affair did not affect lord asriel in any meaningful way, all of this does not excuse literal child murder or abuse towards the physical embodiment of her soul but it certainly is fascinating to see someone able to bury their own humanity so deeply that evil itself can’t see it when it looks her right in the face
